MEMBERSHIP OF THE INNS OF COURT

From the Middle Ages there have been four independent Inns of Court (a combination of law schools and professional societies) in London:

  • Lincoln's Inn
  • Inner Temple
  • Middle Temple
  • Gray's Inn

    All intending barristers need to join an Inn of Court and to be called to the bar there (see Legal education to 1850).

    The three levels of membership in the Inns are:

  • Students
  • Barristers
  • Benchers (see Glossary).

    The governing bodies of the Inner Temple, which comprise benchers of the Inn, are:

  • Parliament (of the Inner Temple)
  • Bench Table
  • Bench Committees (see Glossary).
