PUPILS

The Further Education Programme is a compulsory part of a pupil's training. You will not be entitled to obtain a final practicing certificate or enter independent practice without having completed the requirements so you must register your pupillage AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. Please return a COPY of your Schedule 14 to Beth Phillips, Education and Training Department, Treasury Building, London EC4Y 7HL. For more information on pupillage, please visit the pupillage section of the Bar Standards Board website.

The programme is composed of two separate elements: an Advocacy Course and the Practice Management Course (formally the Advice to Counsel Course)  both run by the Inn. Pupils must also complete a minimum of 20 hours training in forensic accounts by the end of their first three years in practice (arranged through the Bar Council).

The Pupils' Advocacy Training Programme for 2008-09 in London and the South East commenced in October 2008. Pupils are divided between Course A beginning in October 2008 and Course B beginning in January 2009. The programme must be completed in your first six. Please contact Beth Phillips on 020 7797 8209 or by emailing: bphillips@innertemple.org.uk for further information.

Inner Temple Pupils' Advocacy Course

The Inner Temple Pupils' Advocacy Course has at its core a residential weekend. During this 3-day course, pupils participate in sessions on case preparation, witness handling, speeches and pleas in mitigation.

Wotton HouseEach pupil is video-reviewed throughout the weekend to give him or her the opportunity to identify and correct any bad habits which affect their overall advocacy performance.

In addition to the weekend, pupils take part in mock trials in local crown courts, and attend a day at the Inn spent on interlocutory applications.

The exercises are taught by judges, Masters of the Bench and barristers of all levels, all of whom have been trained in advocacy teaching. The witness roles are played by student members of the Inn on the Bar Vocational Course who are able to gain up to two Qualifying Sessions this way. The exercises provide basic advocacy confidence and experience, allowing pupils the opportunity to be assessed and receive constructive criticism from highly experienced practitioners.
