A Brief Outline of the Scheme  

General Information

This Scholarship scheme offers barristers belonging to all four Inns of Court who Golden Gate Bridge, San Fransiscoare tenants or employed barristers of under five years' call the opportunity to travel abroad and work as lawyers in other common law jurisdictions and the European Union. Scholarships are tenable from six to twelve weeks. A host law firm assists the scholar to find accommodation and provides expenses. There are up to 12 scholarships annually to the following countries: Australia, Bermuda, Hong Kong, New Zealand, Singapore, USA and countries of the EU. The Trust also welcomes the opportunity to support scholars in placements they have personally arranged. Pegasus Incoming Scholarships

Incoming Pegasus Scholars from overseas normally read for a post graduate degree at a major university (at present, the Cambridge LLM degree), and then come to London for three months to work in first class barristers' chambers.

The scholars receive a stipend to help them cover accommodation and living expenses. In addition to spending time with barristers, the Trust arranges for the scholars to visit various institutions including the House of Lords, the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council, the Faculty of Advocates in Edinburgh, the High Court in Belfast, the Commercial Judges and the Queens Bench Masters at the Royal Courts of Justice, the Old Bailey and a Magistrates Court.

Pegasus Outgoing Scholarships

These scholarships are open to tenants and employed barristers of all four Inns of Court of up to five years' Call. Not only do they provide the scholars with the opportunity to live and work abroad (for a period of 6-12 weeks) but they offer the chance to experience at first hand the workings of a Commonwealth, European or other legal system through attachments to law firms throughout the world and to European institutions. Accommodation and living expenses are provided for the duration of the Scholarship.

Host countries include Australia, Bermuda, Canada, Hong Kong, Israel, New Zealand, Singapore and the USA. The Trust also welcomes the opportunity to support candidates who are able to arrange their own placements.

The Council of Management

The Pegasus Scholarship Trust was first established in 1987 under the Chairmanship of The Rt Honourable the Lord Goff of Chieveley, and the Council of Management includes The Treasurer and Reader of the Inner Temple, Mr Justice Flaux (Chairman), The Rt Hon Lord Justice Mummery, The Rt Hon Lord Justice Laws, The Hon Mr Justice Tomlinson, The Hon Mr Justice Beatson, Mr Registrar Geoffrey Jaques, His Honour Judge Brooke QC, Neil Kaplan QC, James Guthrie QC, Sue Carr QC (Vice-Chairman) and Richard de Lacy QC.

Co-founded by the Inner Temple, Clifford Chance and the Cambridge Commonwealth Trust, Pegasus Scholarships are a great opportunity for young barristers.
