The Inner Temple Garden is one of the most distinguished in London. Dating back to the Medieval times, the Grade-II listed Garden is located overlooking the Embankment. The award-winning garden comprises fine lawn, herbaceous borders, specimen trees, formal pond, meadows, greenhouse, cold frames and pot displays. In addition to the Garden, the team also manages the other horticultural features across the estate.

We are looking for a team focused person to work Mondays and Tuesdays alongside the passionate garden team which includes volunteers and a Garden Trainee. The successful applicant will take pride in their work; have a passion for our special Garden; and understand the importance of core tasks (which can be physical and repetitive) alongside the joy of sharing the Garden with as many people as possible.

The Gardener’s responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Undertake all garden maintenance tasks, working alongside the team or self-led at commercial pace. These include:
    * Weekly ‘Monday Tidy’ where the team prepares the Garden for the week ahead by raking paths, edging lawns, litter collection, changing over gone over pots etc.
    * Lawn and meadow maintenance including mowing using ride on and pedestrian mowers; strimming; lawn fertilising; scarifying with pedestrian scarifier; aerating using verti-drain attachment to compact tractor.
    * Seasonal irrigation including hand watering, setting up sprinklers, contributing to any border and lawn observations to inform the automated irrigation programmes.
    * Seasonal leaf collecting using petrol backpack blowers and electric blowers.
    * Other seasonal tasks such as weeding; mulching; planting (bulbs, annuals, herbaceous, trees and shrubs); hedge clipping; assisting with application of fertilisers, herbicides, and pesticides; nursery works; helping create pot displays.
  • Maintenance of mixed herbaceous plantings to include dead-heading, staking, tying-in, division, feeding.
  • Follow and contribute to a culture of Health and Safety, ensuring safety of themselves and others at all times. This includes maintaining tools and machinery.
  • Contribute to the Garden’s Instagram account sharing the beauty of the Garden by creating posts/stories.
  • Contribute to weekly planning meetings with Garden team.
  • Willingness to share knowledge with garden trainee and volunteers, in addition to set volunteers up with tasks.
