Understanding Accounts Seminar - Everything a Barrister needs to know about how to understand essential accounting principles - in the courtroom and in conference
Event Details

Understanding accounting can be tricky enough when dealing with your own finances, but when faced with cases that involve examination of detailed accounts and unfamiliar terminology, many barristers find themselves struggling, panicking, or feeling completely overwhelmed. Even when working with an expert witness, getting a sufficiently firm understanding of key accounting principles and documents to be able to put your case across can feel extremely challenging.

This new series of events aims to demystify the common accounting jargon and principles you may come across, put you at ease with how to navigate and understand them, and show you how to use them effectively in conference and in the courtroom.

This in-person session will introduce the two most commonly encountered financial statements: the “Statement of Financial Position” (or Balance Sheet) and the “Income Statement” (or “Profit and Loss Account”) and look at what they show you and why. The session will also touch on double entry bookkeeping, recording financial transactions and “GAAP”, (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles), the comprehensive set of rules and conventions that form the foundation for financial accounting standards.

Led by Simon de Quidt, former Partner at Deloitte, lead accountancy expert on the New Practitioner Advocacy Course for the last 15 years and Honorary Bencher of Inner Temple. Chaired by HHJ Denise Saunders.

In person at The Inner Temple, followed by a drinks reception.
