James Guthrie KC

Master Guthrie sadly died on 26 December 2022, aged 72. The Inns’ flag was flown at half-mast on Wednesday 11 January in his memory. 

Master Guthrie was called to the Bar in 1975. He practised at 3 Hare Court specialising in a broad range of appellate work in the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council with expertise in criminal, constitutional and public law cases. He took silk in 1993 and was head of Chambers from 2002 until October 2010. He sat as a Recorder trying criminal and civil cases up until 2021. 

Master Guthrie was elected a Bencher of the Inn in 2000. He was a member of various committees including the Education & Training Committee, Investment Sub-Committee and the Pegasus Scholarship Trust, where he served as Chair from 2014-2019.
