'Religious Disputes and the Custody of Children: Dr Barnardo in the House of Lords' Speaker: Professor Michael Lobban FBA, Professor of Legal History at the London School of Economics and Political Science. In the 19th century, disputes over the custody of children often centred on disagreements over the religious upbringing of the child in question and whether the child should be educated in the faith of its deceased father. In the 1890s, Dr Thomas Barnardo, famous for the homes for destitute and orphaned children he had founded in the East End of London, became involved in several of bitter custody cases with strong sectarian overtones. The fiercely evangelical Dr Barnardo resisted attempts by Catholic agencies acting on behalf of Catholic mothers to gain custody of children in his homes through the writ of habeas corpus. The talk will focus especially on two landmark cases involving Barnardo which reached the House of Lords in this decade. The Temple Shakespeare Cup has returned for another year! Please join us in Middle Temple Hall for a night of fun and Shakespeare. Middle Temple and The Inner Temple will each put on 1 hour of Shakespeare, with a winner declared by a panel of celebrity judges. Shakespeare himself put on performances in Middle Temple Hall, Twelfth Night being premiered there in 1602. With two bars and two excellent performances, it will be the perfect opportunity to meet and connect with members of both Inns. Please note that small individual picnics are available to pre-purchase up until 9am on Thursday 8 May. Vegetarian and vegan options are available. They will be available for pick-up between 5pm and 6pm on the day from the Garden Room and can be taken out to the Garden to enjoy. NB: You will need to also book a ticket for the performance.
