This webinar examines the central role of Article 8 ECHR in UK law since the Human Rights Act 1998, particularly across areas such as privacy, surveillance, immigration, and child protection. Against the backdrop of proposals to repeal and replace the Act, it asks what would follow in its absence: whether the common law and Parliament could fill the gap, or whether its removal would mark a significant shift in the balance between individual rights and executive power. This webinar will explore the legal and practical limits on removal from the UK, focusing on Article 3 ECHR, the Convention Against Torture, and the principle of non-refoulement under the Refugee Convention. In light of ongoing debates about asylum reform and the UK’s international obligations, it considers what scope there is for change, whether Parliament could narrow existing protections, and how far constraints on removal are embedded in domestic law. The President of the King's Bench Division on the subject of judicial independence in the modern age: past, present and future. Dame Victoria Sharp DBE was called to the Bar in 1979 and took Silk in 2001. She was appointed as a Recorder in 1998, a Deputy High Court Judge in 2008 and a High Court Judge of the Queen’s Bench Division in 2009. She was Presiding Judge of the Western Circuit from 2012 to 2013 and was appointed a Lady Justice of Appeal in 2013, and Vice President of the Queen’s Bench Division in 2016. She was sworn in as the President of the King’s Bench Division in 2019, the first woman to hold the position. Registration (with refreshments) will be from 5.30pm, and the lecture will be followed by a drinks reception. Old School is a satirical ensemble play set at a 25-year reunion and fundraiser for an elite private school, where a group of former classmates, now financiers, lawyers and consultants, gather as trustees of the school’s foundation to celebrate success and secure donations while performing carefully curated versions of their lives. The event is slick on the surface but brittle underneath, with old hierarchies, grudges and insecurities still firmly in place. When a livestream is accidentally left running, private conversations, past behaviour and the reality that the trustees have been diverting donations for their own benefit are exposed in real time, triggering a frantic and often ridiculous scramble to control the narrative, shift blame and preserve reputations, all while maintaining the awkward social dynamics and distinctly British instinct to prioritise appearances over honesty.
