A Career in International Justice, Development and Rule of Law Capacity Building
A Career in International Justice, Development and Rule of Law Capacity Building: Pathways and Insights – 'Can we make a difference?' This event brings together leading practitioners in international justice, rule of law reform and development to explore the wide range of career opportunities in this demanding but rewarding field. Against the backdrop of diminishing resources and increasing global need, an expert panel will share first-hand experience of designing, delivering and evaluating justice and rule of law programmes around the world. The panel will explain the fundamental principles, terminology and practical challenges of international Rule of Law capacity building projects, including needs-analysis, in-country engagement, sustainability, cultural sensitivity and measuring success. Speakers will also provide examples of projects, explain the factors that shaped outcomes and reflect on their own professional and personal journeys. The event is aimed at students and practitioners interested in full-time, secondment, pro bono and/or “low bono” roles in international development, human rights and rule of law. It will offer practical guidance on qualifications, skills, languages, funding realities, where to find opportunities and how to build a pathway into this field. This in-person event will offer an honest and practical exploration of what it takes to build justice systems internationally – what works, what doesn’t, and how to be part of it. 5.30pm registration for 5.45pm start 7.45pm end, followed by networking reception Members: Please login in to the Members' Area to book Non-members: Please scroll below the members' login box and click "Add Ticket" Book/cancel by: 01/02/2026

Understanding Accounts Seminar - Everything a Barrister needs to know about how to understand essential accounting principles - in the courtroom and in conference
Understanding accounting can be tricky enough when dealing with your own finances, but when faced with cases that involve examination of detailed accounts and unfamiliar terminology, many barristers find themselves struggling, panicking, or feeling completely overwhelmed. Even when working with an expert witness, getting a sufficiently firm understanding of key accounting principles and documents to be able to put your case across can feel extremely challenging. This new series of events aims to demystify the common accounting jargon and principles you may come across, put you at ease with how to navigate and understand them, and show you how to use them effectively in conference and in the courtroom. This in-person session will introduce the two most commonly encountered financial statements: the “Statement of Financial Position” (or Balance Sheet) and the “Income Statement” (or “Profit and Loss Account”) and look at what they show you and why. The session will also touch on double entry bookkeeping, recording financial transactions and “GAAP”, (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles), the comprehensive set of rules and conventions that form the foundation for financial accounting standards. Led by Simon de Quidt, former Partner at Deloitte, lead accountancy expert on the New Practitioner Advocacy Course for the last 15 years and Honorary Bencher of Inner Temple. Chaired by HHJ Denise Saunders. In person at The Inner Temple, followed by a drinks reception. To book: Non-members please scroll to the bottom of the page, click "Add Ticket", fill in your details and then click "Checkout". Members should log in first, and then complete the process as above.

Social Context of the Law
Title: The Duty to Rescue Speakers: Tba The speakers will discuss ‘Duty to Rescue’, the legal concept that holds people (and possibly states) responsible for helping others in dangerous situations such as people drowning at sea, loss of life as a result of state action/ natural disaster/climate change. The extent of any legal duty, the significance of the behaviour of the victim and the remedies for any breach vary from jurisdiction to jurisdiction and approaches differ widely. Some states punish failure to attempt rescue by the criminal law, some by the civil law. Others do not accept that there is any legal duty at all. The event will be delivered in person and online. The session will include an opportunity for Q&A and for post-talk networking. Non-members: Scroll beneath the Members Login box and click 'Add Ticket'. Cancel by: 09/03/2026

History Society Lecture
'The Early History of the English Bar' Speaker: Professor Sir John Baker KC LLD FBA The legal profession began to emerge in the early years of the 13th century. By the 1250s there were legally trained judges, attorneys and pleaders, and a school of common law associated with the Common Bench. Professor Baker will show how the pleaders acquired, in the 14th century, the status and degree of Serjeant at Law, forming the so-called order of the coif. During the same period the educational system was taken over by the inns, and already by 1388 those known as the Inns of Court had a special status. The talk will also explore the process by which the degrees of barrister and Bencher, originally acquired by participation in moots and readings, became qualifications for practice at the Bar of the King’s Courts. In person and livestreamed from The Inner Temple, London Doors open: 5.30pm Lecture: 6pm - 7pm Reception: 7pm - 8pm Not an Inner Temple Member? Please scroll beneath the Members Login box and click Add Ticket. Please note that a recording of this lecture will be made available on www.innertemple.org.uk/historylectures Cancel by: 20/03/2026 Please note: cancellations made after this may not be refunded.
