History Society Lecture
'Sub-Treasurers of The Inner Temple' Ever wondered why Inner Temple sticks to the title 'Sub-Treasurer', when all the other Inns have opted for 'Under Treasurer'. Why was a traditionally militarised zone demilitarised? Were relationships between Sub-Treasurers and their Treasurers always trouble-free? The Sub-Treasurer, Greg Dorey CVO, looks back at his predecessors over the centuries and attempts to answer some of these questions. In person and livestreamed from The Inner Temple, London Doors open: 5.30pm Lecture: 6pm - 7pm (GMT+1) Reception: 7pm - 8pm Not an Inner Temple Members? Deepfake Pornography, Cyberflashing and Law Reform: how AI and technology are fuelling new frontiers in violence against women and girls
Technology is transforming the ways that sexual violence is perpetrated and experienced which, in turn, presents significant challenges for the law and legal system. The criminal law performs a vital role in naming, framing and tackling all forms of violence against women and girls, but it is struggling to keep pace with the exponential growth in online abuse. Taking the examples of deepfake sexual abuse (‘deepfake porn’), cyberflashing and the emerging harms in the metaverse, this lecture examines the current law and options for the future. It suggests the failures in current approaches exemplify law’s historic marginalisation of women’s experiences and recommends a comprehensive response which includes civil and criminal law reforms, together with a robust regulatory framework. This talk looking at Prof McGlynn's research will last around 40 minutes, followed by a question and answer session, and then the opportunity for informal discussion at a reception afterwards. Non-Members: Please scroll beneath the Members Login box and click Add Ticket, enter your details and then click "Checkout" to complete the booking.

Mapping the Changing Face of Cross-Examination in Criminal Trials
Over a three year period, a research team from the University of Nottingham and Nottingham Trent University mapped the nature and extent of ongoing changes to criminal advocacy, identifying a range of practices and issues, and has sought to develop appropriate solutions through a series of recommendations. As the first study of its kind, the project not only analysed how new approaches towards cross-examination have produced change on the ground, but are also making a real difference in terms of effecting cultural change within the legal profession to the questioning of vulnerable witnesses. The team will present the findings from the project at this special event, including a question and answer session, and then the opportunity for informal discussion at a reception afterwards. Non-Members: Please scroll beneath the Members Login box and click Add Ticket.
