Understanding Accounts Webinar 1 - Generally Accepted Accounting Principles and Common Problem Areas
Understanding accounting can be tricky enough when dealing with your own finances, but when faced with cases that involve examination of detailed accounts and unfamiliar terminology, many barristers find themselves struggling, panicking, or feeling completely overwhelmed. Even when working with an expert witness, getting a sufficiently firm understanding of key accounting principles and documents to be able to put your case across can feel extremely challenging. This new series of events aims to demystify the common accounting jargon and principles you may come across, put you at ease with how to navigate and understand them, and show you how to use them effectively in conference and in the courtroom. Webinar 1 will examine how “GAAP” (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles) encompass and provide the framework within which specific, detailed accounting principles and standards are established, interpreted, and applied, and look at the commonest problem areas you are likely to encounter when dealing with accounts as a barrister. Led by Simon de Quidt, former Partner at Deloitte, lead accountancy expert on the New Practitioner Advocacy Course for the last 15 years and Honorary Bencher of Inner Temple. Chaired by Grahame Aldous KC. This event will take place online only. A Zoom link will be emailed to you in the week prior to the event. To book: Non-members please scroll to the bottom of the page, click "Add Ticket", fill in your details and then click "Checkout". Members should log in first, and then complete the process as above.

Social Context of the Law
Title: The Duty to Rescue Speakers: Andrew Warnock KC (Deka Chambers), further speakers tba. The speakers will discuss ‘Duty to Rescue’, the legal concept that holds people (and possibly states) responsible for helping others in dangerous situations such as people drowning at sea, loss of life as a result of state action/ natural disaster/climate change. The extent of any legal duty, the significance of the behaviour of the victim and the remedies for any breach vary from jurisdiction to jurisdiction and approaches differ widely. Some states punish failure to attempt rescue by the criminal law, some by the civil law. Others do not accept that there is any legal duty at all. The event will be delivered in person and online. History Society Lecture
'The Early History of the English Bar' Speaker: Professor Sir John Baker KC LLD FBA The legal profession began to emerge in the early years of the 13th century. By the 1250s there were legally trained judges, attorneys and pleaders, and a school of common law associated with the Common Bench. Professor Baker will show how the pleaders acquired, in the 14th century, the status and degree of Serjeant at Law, forming the so-called order of the coif. During the same period the educational system was taken over by the inns, and already by 1388 those known as the Inns of Court had a special status. The talk will also explore the process by which the degrees of barrister and Bencher, originally acquired by participation in moots and readings, became qualifications for practice at the Bar of the King’s Courts. In person and livestreamed from The Inner Temple, London Doors open: 5.30pm Lecture: 6pm - 7pm Reception: 7pm - 8pm Not an Inner Temple Member? Please scroll beneath the Members Login box and click Add Ticket. Please note that a recording of this lecture will be made available on www.innertemple.org.uk/historylectures Cancel by: 20/03/2026 Please note: cancellations made after this may not be refunded.
