The Selden Society: “A Scotsman caught young” – The influences which shaped Lord Mansfield

Selden Society and the Inns of Court Annual Legal Lecture 2024
The Rt Hon Lord Neuberger of Abbotsbury, President of the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom from 2012 to 2017 and Treasurer of Lincoln’s Inn in 2017, considered how Lord Mansfield’s jurisprudence was influenced by his politically dangerous family background, his deep learning and wide-ranging interests, and his political career.

Lord Mansfield (1705-93) is one of the giants of English legal history. He was instrumental in the development of English law, and in particular commercial law, and his decisions over the course of his 32 years as Lord Chief Justice included definitions of fundamental legal principles. His decisions are still regularly cited in cases in England and Wales and in the United States. Recorded on 22 October 2024 at Lincoln's Inn.
