The first female President of the Employment Appeal Tribunal

Ingrid Simler was born in South Africa in 1963 and emigrated to London as a child. She was educated at Henrietta Barnett School, became a British citizen in 1981 and went on to study at Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge and the University of Amsterdam.

She went on to practise at Devereux Chambers (where she became Head of Chambers before becoming a judge). She was next appointed to the Attorney General’s Civil Panel A in 2001, Junior Counsel to the Inland Revenue (Common Law) and Recorder on the SE circuit in 2002. She took Silk in 2006, was appointed as a Deputy High Court Judge in 2010 and became a Judge of the High Court (Queen’s Bench Division) in October 2013. In January 2015 she was appointed President of the Employment Appeal Tribunal for a three-year term which ended on 31 December 2018 and is a High Court Liaison Judge for Diversity.

In November 2016 she was appointed by the Master of the Rolls to the Civil Executive Team providing support to the MR for the oversight of civil justice and implementation of the Reform Programme as it affects civil justice.
