Women in Law Podcasts

These podcasts were created from a series of public lectures entitled The First Women Lawyers in Great Britain and the Empire – a Centenary Celebration sponsored by Oliver Fisher Solicitors and the Centre for Law and Culture at St Mary’s University Twickenham. They record the personal stories of the women who tried to join the legal profession pre-1919 and those who went on to practise law after 1919.

Dr Bourne is an Associate member of Normanton Chambers and Programme Director for Law at St. Mary's University Twickenham.

Elizabeth Cruickshank is a non-practising solicitor and freelance writer, formerly Chairwoman of the AWS, Editor of Link and author of “Women in the Law” and “All You Need to Know about Being a Trainee Solicitor.”

Liz Goldthorpe is a legal biographer and retired tribunal judge.

Dr Derry is a Lecturer at the School of Law, Open University.

Dr Frances Burton is Senior Lecturer in Property and Family Law at Buckinghamshire New University, Co-Director of the International Centre for Family Law, Policy and Practice and the Editor of International Family Law, Policy and Practice.

Katie Broomfield is a postgraduate researcher in the History Department at Royal Holloway, University of London, researching the opening of the legal profession to women in 1919.

Ros Wright QC  is a retired barrister who has worked mainly in the public and regulatory sector. She retired from the Serious Fraud Office, where she was Director for 6 years, in 2003 and since then has been a non-exec director of the OFT, the DTI (now, BIS), member and Chairman of the Supervisory Committee of the European Anti-Fraud Office (OLAF) based in Brussels and of the Insolvency Service. She was chair of the Fraud Advisory Panel, an independent “think-tank”, based (and supported by) the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales from 2003 - 2014.

Charlotte Coleman is a post-graduate researcher at St Mary’s University, Twickenham.
