Can I claim for travel expenses?

You may be eligible to claim travel expenses up to the value of £80 to contribute to the cost of travel to and from your scholarship interview if you meet the below eligibility criteria. Please note that expenses can only be claimed after the interview has taken place.

Eligibility criteria:

  • You are a current undergraduate student and are eligible for the maximum maintenance loan via student finance*. For full details see below.

OR

  • You are a current postgraduate student and were eligible for the maximum maintenance loan via student finance at the time of your undergraduate studies*.

OR

  • You are currently in receipt of income or housing benefits (this must apply to you personally, not a family member)

Additionally, you must attend an interview in-person at your nearest available location, and you must have attended that interview.

In the 2024/25 academic year the maximum maintenance loan is the following, depending on your circumstances:

  • If living with your parents - £8,610
  • If living away from your parents, outside London - £10,227
  • If living away from your parents, in London - £13,348
  • You are spending a year of a UK course studying abroad - £11,713
  • If you’re 60 or over on the first day or over on the first day of the first academic year of your course- £4,327

What travel expenses can I claim?

You can only claim for travel expenses incurred within the UK.

If eligible, you may claim for the cost of public transport which includes coaches, trains, buses, trams and the London Underground. Only standard tickets will be reimbursed. Where it is the most cost effective option, flights within the UK will be covered.

We will not routinely cover the cost of taxis. Exceptions will be considered where it is part of a reasonable adjustment or there are no alternative modes of transport available. Any taxi claims must be agreed with the Scholarships Team in advance of your interview.

We encourage the use of public transport wherever possible but where that this not possible we will cover the cost of mileage at a rate of 45p per mile. 

We are not able to cover the costs of accommodation.

When can I make a claim?

Claims can only be made after you have attended the interview but must be made within 30 days of your interview date. To make a claim you should email scholarships@innertemple.org.uk who will subsequently send you a form asking you to provide the following:

  • Evidence that you meet the criteria to make a travel expense claim (this may include a letter from the Student Finance Company, proof of postgraduate study or proof that you are currently in receipt of income and housing benefits)
  • Receipts or tickets that show the total cost of your journey
  • If claiming milage you should attach a document stating the start and end point of your journey along with the number of miles travelled and the dates travelled.
  • Bank details

When can I expect to receive reimbursement?

Payments at the Inner Temple are processed on a monthly basis. Claims should be made by the 1st of the month in order to be processed by the end of that same month. Claims submitted after this time will be processed the following month.
