Information for scholarship holders

The deadline to accept your scholarship, or apply for a deferral, if 1 June in the year your scholarship is awarded. If you do not complete either a deferral request form or the acceptance forms by 1 June 2026, your scholarship will be forfeited.

Accepting your scholarship

To accept your scholarship, you need to complete the following steps:

  • Sign the undertaking form, which is sent to you with your results letter
  • Via the applications portal you must:
    • Upload the signed undertaking form
    • Submit your payment details
    • Submit a copy of a letter or email confirming an offer of a place on the Bar Course. The document must:
      • be directly from the course provider – either a letter (on headed paper) or an email (from the institution’s email domain)
      • confirm that they are offering you a place on the Bar Course
      • include the date you are starting the course
      • If your offer of a place on the Bar Course was conditional, you will be asked to provide a letter from the course provider confirming you have met the conditions.

If you have any issues meeting the deadline of 1 June, please get in contact with the Scholarships Team.

You must inform the Inner Temple if your plans concerning the start of your Bar Course change after completing the Undertaking Form.

Deferring your scholarship

If you wish to defer your scholarship you should not complete an undertaking form. You are permitted to apply for a deferral for one year.

To submit a deferral, you must complete the deferrals request form.

Payment of your scholarship
  • Scholarships are paid, in one instalment, depending on when you are due to start the Bar Course.
  • We aim to pay your scholarship 4-6 weeks before your course commences.
  • Scholarships are paid into your account; we do not pay the course provider directly.
  • We will be unable to pay the award to you, until your membership to the Inn has been approved, and you have submitted all acceptance documents as detailed above.
  • We process payments once a month, so in order to be paid on 28th of that month, you must have met the payment conditions, by the 1st of that month.
Joining the Inn

Please note that if you have not already joined Inner Temple, you are required to do so at least 12 weeks prior to the start of the Bar Course, although we recommend that you apply as soon as possible.
