What is mooting?

Moots are legal exercises whereby student members are required to argue in a court setting, usually based on fictitious problems that are based on real cases. Mooting competitions would see an individual or team argue against an opposing team.

What are the benefits of joining the society?

There are several benefits, including but not limited to:

  • Great addition to your CV and pupillage applications
  • Build confidence with your oral advocacy
  • Practise in a court setting
  • Case analysis work and legal research
  • Improving your ability to think on your feet
  • Networking opportunities with current members of the Bar
Are there any costs associated with joining the society?

It is free to join the Society. While most activities including training sessions and internal competitions are usually free, if you take part in external competitions there may be some costs associated with this.

The Society will endeavour to subsidies travel and accommodation to external competitions where they can, however, there may be some instances where you will be asked to contribute to this. You will be informed before signing up for the competition if there will be any costs to consider on your side.
