There are countless opportunities to attend debating tournaments externally. We are happy to send you to any tournaments once you have attended your first practice sessions and we have the means to do so, because there is no better way to learn then by practicing.
DS is also the only Inn of Court Debating Society which sends its members to debates on the university circuit. In the academic year 2024-2025 we have sent debaters to Liverpool, Birmingham, King’s College London, Imperial, Cambridge and St Andrews. If you would like to get involved in British Parliamentary debating as a newcomer, or if you were a university debater who would like to continue to debate past your degree, Inner Temple Debating Society is the place for you! The annual Inner Temple Inter-Varsity Debating Competition takes place every year at the beginning of February, where we host the top competitors on the debating circuit. As a non-member who is currently studying an undergraduate degree or GDL, you can sign up to take part in the competition representing your university.
Members of the Inner Temple will have the opportunity to support the smooth running of the competition (which includes acting as a swing debater, which is a great opportunity to try your hand at debating in a competition).
It is also a fantastic way to network with senior judges who assist in judging the debate, get to know debaters from other university societies, get more involved in the Inner Temple.
