Advocacy Teacher Training Course

Online Intro Session: Tuesday 8 September, 6-7pm via Zoom

The course directors will run a short online session, one evening in the week prior to the weekend course, to introduce the Hampel Method ahead of the course. This additional session has been added to give a day or so for the method to sink in ahead of the weekend, and also to free up some time on the Saturday to allow for more practice of the method.

Day One: 9am to 4pm

A full day’s practice of the Hampel Method of advocacy training. Our student volunteers present a number of examinations-in-chief, cross-examinations and closing speeches for a straightforward case, which our trainees trainers then give reviews of using the Hampel Method, with our senior trainers then giving feedback on these reviews.

Day Two: 9am to 1pm

An assessment session during which trainee trainers will be assessed on the reviews they give, with the senior trainers subsequently deciding on whether they can be accredited as a provisional advocacy trainer for the Inn.

In order to become a fully accredited advocacy trainer, within one year of becoming a provisional trainer you will need to teach on one of our advocacy training residential courses for Pupils, which take place at The Berystede hotel and conference centre in Ascot. There will be a course in 2026 on the weekend of 24/25 October, and a further course on the weekend of 23/24 January 2027.

The Advocacy Teacher Training Course is free of charge and open to members of the Inn who have been practising for a minimum of 7 years. Please note that some preparation work will be required in advance of the course, familiarising yourself with both the case being used at the weekend, and the Inn's Handbook for Advocacy Trainers.

The next course will take place on the weekend of 12 and 13 September 2026, with the online introductory session taking place on Tuesday 8 September (6-7pm).
