How we assess your application

We will assess your application (form and interview) using a points-based system, assessing against each of the scholarship criteria.

Application form and interview performance is assessed separately.

How are the criteria assessed?
  • Academic Achievement – Assessed on application form content only.
  • Advocacy Potential – Assessed on application form content & interview answers
  • Interpersonal Skills – Assessed on application form content & interview answers
  • Motivation and Resilience – Assessed on application form content & interview answers
  • Legal Analysis & Reasoning – Assessed at interview only (case exercise).
Shortlisting and Application Assessment
All application forms are marked, independently, by 2 markers, who score the 4 criteria assessed on application form content.
Candidates are then shortlisted based the scores for Academic Achievement and Motivation & Resilience.
The Inn can interview a maximum of 400 applicants. Where the number of shortlisted applicants exceeds 400, the Inn will then use the total application form score.
The Inn also remains committed to contextual recruitment, ensuring achievements are assessed in the context in which they were attained; accordingly, contextual data and mitigating circumstances are an important part of the shortlisting process.
Interview Assessment

Interviews are conducted by panels of at least 3 members of Inner Temple. The panels score the 4 criteria which are assessed at interview (Advocacy Potential, Interpersonal Skills, Motivation & Resilience and Legal Analysis & Reasoning).

Interview panels do not have access to application forms and are not informed on the scores awarded for the application assessment.

Final Scores

After the interviews have concluded, a final score is calculated taking the sum of your Academic Achievement score and your interview assessment scores.
