The award does not cover general student expenses or costs unrelated to your course.

Disabled Students Allowance

GDL and Bar Course students are eligible to apply for Disabled Students Allowance (DSA) via Student Finance England.

If you are eligible to apply for DSA, you must do so, before applying for an Disability Award.

More information on DSA can be found here

Course Provider/ Chambers Support

Most GDL and Bar Course providers have their own student disability support services. Applicants must request reasonable adjustments and support from their course provider in the first instance.

Application Process

Applications must be submitted via the online application form, linked on the Disability Awards homepage.

The application form will ask you to:

  • Describe your disability
  • Explain how it impacts your study
  • List the items you are requesting funding for (including costs)
  • Upload supporting documentation which explains your needs.
    • This could be in the form of a statement of need from a specialist consultant, your GP, an occupational health adviser, an educational specialist or another specialist with appropriate qualifications.
  • Uploading supporting documentation to show you have requested reasonable adjustments from your course provider.

Applications are reviewed on a monthly basis, during the first week of each month, and we aim to inform applicants of the outcome of their application by the 28th of the month.
