'The Trial; In Absurdia' - Inner Temple Drama Society
For one night only, the Inner Temple Drama Society will be performing their 2025 Edinburgh Fringe production, 'The Trial: In Absurdia', If you were unable to make it to Edinburgh this summer, this is your only chance to see the play live. Kafka meets Monty Python when mild-mannered accountant Jo is arrested abroad for a nonsensical crime. Their predicament escalates into a surreal nightmare of endless red tape and baffling legal theatrics. They enlist Sam, a UK barrister armed with a powdered wig and an unshakable belief in justice. As Sam fights for fairness within an arbitrarily punitive system, their logic is met with absurdity at every turn. A sharp parody of Kafka’s The Trial, The Trial: In Absurdia skewers bureaucracy, legal quirks, and the limits of fairness, blending witty dialogue, surreal twists, and biting satire. Doors open: 6.45pm Performance: 7pm - 8pm Cancel by: 22/09/2025 If you have any questions, please email drama@innertemplesocieties.org

Hampel Lecture 2025
The Hampel Lecture: Professor The Hon George Hampel AM, KC - A Celebration of His Life and Achievements Delivered by His Honour Judge Anthony Leonard (Inner Temple Bencher) with contributions from the audience and comments from Her Honour Judge (Felicity) Hampel AM SC (Inner Temple Bencher). George Hampel (1933-2024), an Australian barrister, judge and academic, and an Academic Bencher of The Inner Temple, was best known for his contribution to advocacy training; he was the first professor of advocacy to be appointed worldwide. 'The Hampel Method' was adopted by many common law countries to teach advocacy and was introduced by him to the four Inns of Court of England and Wales when he led a series of 'training the trainer' events here in the 1980’s. But George Hampel was much more than the creator of 'The Hampel Method' – he filled his 91 years with adventure and accomplishments within and outside of the law. We welcome members of the Bar and Bench of England and Wales and legal professionals and others from across the world to join us for this Memorial Lecture delivered by His Honour Judge Anthony Leonard, which will provide an opportunity to examine a life well lived. The lecture will include an opportunity for guests to share their own memories. It will be followed by a drinks reception for those attending in person. While we encourage guests to join us in person wherever possible, this event will be live streamed for those who wish to attend online. From Pupillage to Silk (and everything in between): Practical Tools for Navigating Stress, Balance and Resilience
Bibi Badejo will be joined by Annette Henry KC, a Wellbeing Consultant, Life Coach and a founder of Owning Your Wellbeing. She has built a unique career at the intersection of law and wellbeing. The conversation will explore the distinctive stresses of life at the bar, from the constant “fight or flight” state to the isolation of court work and the challenges that arise at different career stages. Whether it’s the struggle to establish credibility in the first ten years or the post-silk anxiety of maintaining reputation, Annette brings deep insight into the realities barristers face. Expect candid reflections, practical tools, and a refreshing discussion about how legal professionals can reclaim their wellbeing and perform at their best in practice and in life. As a former competitive diver she knows the value of investing in mental fitness as much as in physical fitness. Bibi Badejo is a family law barrister at 4PB, a Bencher of Inner Temple, and an internationally recognised advocacy trainer. Alongside her court practice, she hosts The Advocacy Podcast and founded The Advocacy Coach, helping legal professionals worldwide sharpen their advocacy skills. Annette Henry is a Human Givens (HG) Consultant, qualified psychotherapist, HG.Dip.P, MHGI and Kings Counsel. She practiced at the criminal Bar and developed a specialism in mental health law within the criminal justice system over her many years in practice. She wrote a practitioner’s guide to mental health, worked with the Mental Health Act Commission and presided over Mental Health Review Tribunals. Her practical experience at the Bar, and as a competitive sportswoman, makes her uniquely well placed to provide guidance and practical advice to those who wish to cultivate and maintain good mental health and wellbeing whilst thriving in practice. This event will take place in person at the Inn, and will be followed by a drinks reception.

AI and the Bar webinar 1 - The Right to Fair Trial in the Age of AI: Current challenges and next steps
The Right to Fair Trial in the Age of AI: Current challenges and next steps There are genuine concerns about how to have fair trials in the age of AI. AI tools are developing rapidly, but they are not yet a substitute for qualified legal reasoning, human judgment, or tailored legal advice. At the same time, many judges and counsel are deploying AI in their preparation and execution of proceedings, often without formal oversight and training. In this webinar, we will draw upon research in multiple jurisdictions to consider the potential benefits of AI in enhancing efficiency and access to justice as well as the guardrails that are needed to ensure the upholding of international standards of due process. About the speaker: Professor Philippa Webb is Professor of Public International Law at the Blavatnik School of Government and a Fellow of Exeter College. She is the Director of the Oxford Institute of Technology and Justice, which is launching in October 2025. Philippa is also a barrister at Twenty Essex and has appeared in domestic and international courts, including the International Court of Justice, the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea, the European Court of Human Rights and the UK Supreme Court. Previously, she held positions in the Presidency of the International Court of Justice, the Office of the Prosecutor at the International Criminal Court and in United Nations Headquarters. Her publications include The Right to a Fair Trial in International Law (2021, with A Clooney). Chaired by Prof Yvonne McDermott Rees. A recording of the event will be provided to those booked on after the session. Social Context of the Law
Title: Is the Rise in Mass Litigation distorting our Legal System and the UK Economy? Speakers: Tba Moderator: Tba The speakers will consider litigation funding and different perspectives from corporates and legal firms about the impact of the way in which litigation is being funded in relation to climate-related issues and on certain businesses critical to economic growth, as well as on the justice system. Businesses such as Shell are on the receiving end of “class” and similar actions brought by charities and groups claiming to act in the public interest or, in some cases, acting out of money-making self-interest, supported by litigation funding that ultimately may put businesses at competitive disadvantage. Many argue that appropriate regulation is required to level the playing field. On the other side of argument, a recent survey by the International Legal Finance Association (IFLA) found that businesses are generally supportive of the effect of litigation funding on the business environment. The event will be delivered in person and online. The session will include an opportunity for Q&A and for post-talk networking. AI and the Bar webinar 2 - Ethics, Evidence, and Regulation
In this webinar, we will explore key questions posed by the advent of Artificial Intelligence for legal practice, including: • What key legal principles should drive the responsible use, development, and employment of AI in Law? • Does the law of evidence need to be amended in light of the risks posed by AI-generated evidence? • What are the key areas of convergence and divergence across different jurisdictions’ approaches to AI regulation? Speakers: Nema Milaninia is a partner at King & Spalding LLP. His practice focuses on regulatory compliance and litigation, cross-border investigations, white-collar defense, and public international law litigation. He was previously appointed by President Biden as a senior advisor in the State Department, where he focused on international criminal law and technology policy. Nema also served as a prosecutor at the International Criminal Court and the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia. Burkhard Schafer is Professor of Computational Legal Theory at Edinburgh Law School. His main field of interest is the interaction between law, science and computer technology from doctrinal, comparative and legal-theoretical perspectives. This research encompasses both the problems that technology and technological change poses to the law – technology law – and the use of technology in the justice system and the legal services industry – legal informatics. He is member of the expert group of AI4People, chairing their working group on an ethics framework for legal technology, and member of the data ethics group of the Turing Institute. Chaired by Prof Yvonne McDermott Rees A recording of the event will be provided to those booked on after the session.
