The Development of Jury Trial in England

The Rt Hon the Lord Burnett of Maldon KG DL (former Lord Chief Justice of England)

Lord Burnett will explore the fascinating development of jury trial in England with particular focus on its role in the criminal courts.

The lecture will trace how the boundaries between courts that tried criminal cases with juries and those that did not have evolved over time. It will also examine, in their historical context, the current issues surrounding the limitations on the jurisdiction of Magistrates’ Courts.

Lord Burnett is a Master Bencher of the Middle Temple and a member of the Council of the Selden Society.

The lecture will be followed by a reception and then a dinner at Middle Temple, for those who would like to attend.
