Inner Temple

Anthony Glass QC, Master of the Bench, sadly died on Thursday 11 July. The Inn’s flag will fly at half-mast on Thursday 18 July in his memory.

Master Glass was called to the Bar in 1965, appointed silk in 1986 and elected as a Governing Bencher in 1995. He practiced from QEB Hollis Whiteman. Details of any funeral and/or memorial service will be circulated as appropriate in due course.

Professor John Gardner, Master of the Bench, sadly died on Thursday 11 July. The Inn’s flag will fly at half-mast on Friday 19 July in his memory.

Master Gardner was a Professor of Law and Philosophy and Senior Research Fellow at All Souls, Oxford. He was called to the Bar in 1988 and elected as an Academic Bencher in 2003. A funeral service will be held for Master Gardner at All Souls College Chapel on Thursday 25 July at 11am, followed by a reception. There will be a memorial service in the autumn for which details will be circulated as appropriate in due course.

Sir David Maddison, Master of the Bench, sadly died on Saturday 29 June.

A funeral service will take place at 10.30am next Wednesday, 10 July 2019 at Liverpool Parish Church – all are welcome to attend and no RSVP is necessary. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Marie Curie Hospice in Woolton, Liverpool would be much appreciated.

Master Maddison was called to the Bar by Inner Temple in 1970 and elected as a Bencher in 2005. He was appointed a Recorder in 1990 and a Circuit Judge in 1992. He served as a member of the Parole Board from 1996 to 2002. In 2003 he was appointed a Senior Circuit Judge, and as Honorary Recorder of Manchester and Resident Judge for Manchester Crown Court that same year. Master Maddison served in those roles until his appointment to the High Court (Queen’s Bench Division) in 2008. During his time at the High Court, he served as Judicial Member to the Crown Court Rule Committee in 2009 and Director of Criminal Training for the Judicial Studies Board in 2010. On his retirement from the bench in 2013, Master Maddison continued to sit on an ad hoc basis. He made a significant contribution to the Inn by speaking at various education and training events, proposing students for Call and chairing the annual Liverpool John Moores University and Inner Temple debate over a number of years.

Middle Temple

Sir George Newman, Treasurer of Middle Temple in 2009, sadly died on Sunday 9 June, aged 78.
There will be a private family cremation followed by a memorial at Middle Temple, details tba.

Gray's Inn

Sir Guenter Treitel QC DCL FBA, Honorary Bencher of Gray's Inn, sadly died on Friday 14 June 2019.
Further details will be made available when known.

John Cherryman QC, Bencher of Gray's Inn, sadly died on Sunday 23 June 2019.
There will be a private family cremation and no memorial service.
