How to join the Inn
There are four Inns of Court: the Honourable Societies of the Inner Temple, Gray's Inn, Lincoln's Inn and Middle Temple. The Inns are colleges of Barristers dating back to medieval times and each one has its own history, traditions and character.
The highest ranking members of the Inn are the Masters of the Bench. They are the governing body and are generally Judges or eminent counsel. The Treasurer of the Inn is the most senior Bencher and his term of office lasts one year. The Reader is his deputy and usually his successor.
Before completing the two application forms required for membership of the Inner Temple, it is worth reading the excerpt from the four Inns' Consolidated Regulations regarding the necessary qualifications.
Notice to all Prospective Members
The Inn normally requires that all prospective members join the Inner Temple by the 31st May in the year in which they plan to begin the BPTC. For example, if someone intends to commence the BPTC in September 2013, they would normally be required to join the Inner Temple by the 31st May 2013. However, due to the new introduction of the Bar Course Aptitude Test, the Inner Temple has decided to extend the deadline until 31st July 2013. This is due to the exceptional circumstances of the introduction of the BCAT and the Inn will strictly adhere to the May deadline in the future.
