Qualifying Session

Social Context of the Law

Title: Is the Rise in Mass Litigation distorting our Legal System and the UK Economy? Speakers: Martyn Day, Senior Partner Leigh Day, and Alan Morgan, Managing Partner Kendal Global Advisory, who acts for the Fair Civil Justice Campaign Moderator: Tba The speakers will consider litigation funding and different perspectives from corporates and legal firms about the impact of the way in which litigation is being funded in relation to climate-related issues and on certain businesses critical to economic growth, as well as on the justice system. Businesses such as Shell are on the receiving end of “class” and similar actions brought by charities and groups claiming to act in the public interest or, in some cases, acting out of money-making self-interest, supported by litigation funding that ultimately may put businesses at competitive disadvantage. Many argue that appropriate regulation is required to level the playing field. On the other side of argument, a recent survey by the International Legal Finance Association (IFLA) found that businesses are generally supportive of the effect of litigation funding on the business environment. The event will be delivered in person and online. The session will include an opportunity for Q&A and for post-talk networking. AI and the Bar webinar 2 - Ethics, Evidence, and Regulation

In this webinar, we will explore key questions posed by the advent of Artificial Intelligence for legal practice, including: • What key legal principles should drive the responsible use, development, and employment of AI in Law? • Does the law of evidence need to be amended in light of the risks posed by AI-generated evidence? • What are the key areas of convergence and divergence across different jurisdictions’ approaches to AI regulation? Speakers: Nema Milaninia is a partner at King & Spalding LLP. His practice focuses on regulatory compliance and litigation, cross-border investigations, white-collar defense, and public international law litigation. He was previously appointed by President Biden as a senior advisor in the State Department, where he focused on international criminal law and technology policy. Burkhard Schafer is Professor of Computational Legal Theory at Edinburgh Law School. His main field of interest is the interaction between law, science and computer technology from doctrinal, comparative and legal-theoretical perspectives. This research encompasses both the problems that technology and technological change poses to the law – technology law – and the use of technology in the justice system and the legal services industry – legal informatics. Edmund Vickers KC (Red Lion Chambers) is instructed in the most serious criminal cases at Crown Court, High Court and Appellate level. He has recently returned from two years as lead prosecution counsel in a multi-million-pound corruption and money laundering case in the Republic of Seychelles.
