Understanding accounting can be tricky enough when dealing with your own finances, but when faced with cases that involve examination of detailed accounts and unfamiliar terminology, many barristers find themselves struggling, panicking, or feeling completely overwhelmed. Even when working with an expert witness, getting a sufficiently firm understanding of key accounting principles and documents to be able to put your case across can feel extremely challenging. This series of events aims to demystify the common accounting jargon and principles you may come across, put you at ease with how to navigate and understand them, and show you how to use them effectively in conference and in the courtroom. Webinar 3 will focus on some common “red flags” that are often missed by barristers - until it’s too late. Led by Simon de Quidt, former Partner at Deloitte, lead accountancy expert on the New Practitioner Advocacy Course for the last 15 years and Honorary Bencher of Inner Temple. Chaired by Peter Melleney. This event will take place online only. A Zoom link will be emailed to you in the week prior to the event. To book: Non-members please scroll to the bottom of the page, click "Add Ticket", fill in your details and then click "Checkout". Members should log in first, and then complete the process as above.

'The Early History of the English Bar' Speaker: Professor Sir John Baker KC LLD FBA The legal profession began to emerge in the early years of the 13th century. By the 1250s there were legally trained judges, attorneys and pleaders, and a school of common law associated with the Common Bench. Professor Baker will show how the pleaders acquired, in the 14th century, the status and degree of Serjeant at Law, forming the so-called order of the coif. During the same period the educational system was taken over by the inns, and already by 1388 those known as the Inns of Court had a special status. The talk will also explore the process by which the degrees of barrister and Bencher, originally acquired by participation in moots and readings, became qualifications for practice at the Bar of the King’s Courts. In person and livestreamed from The Inner Temple, London Doors open: 5.30pm Lecture: 6pm - 7pm Reception: 7pm - 8pm Not an Inner Temple Member? ‘The Reasonable Person’ Speaker: Dr Valentin Jeutner The talk presents the recently published biography of the common law’s “reasonable person.” In the book, Valentin Jeutner traces the development of this legal figure across time, legal fields, and countries. Beginning with legal figures in ancient Egypt, Greece, and Rome, the book explains how the reasonable person emerged during British industrialisation under the influence of Scottish Enlightenment thinking. Following the figure into colonial courts, battlefields, and debates about self-driving cars, the book argues that the reasonable person encourages judges and jurors to assess conduct by adopting another person’s perspective through empathy. The talk also highlights Sir Edward Hall Alderson, who introduced the standard in Blyth v. Birmingham Waterworks. While inquests are not intended as a means of apportioning blame, and inquiries have no power to determine any person’s civil or criminal liability, both forms of hearing have, in recent years, attracted criticism, as regards length, areas of investigation and particularly the content and style of questioning. This conference will examine the structure and workings of Inquests and Inquiries, with a particular focus on advocacy, but will also examine the experience undergone by those who have appeared as witnesses. All the speakers have expertise in this field, either having chaired an inquest or inquiry, or appeared as an advocate, or as a witness. The conference aims to enable participants to obtain a better understanding of the purpose and structure of these hearings and the skills required for effective advocacy in them, while providing an open forum to discuss these issues. Speakers include: Lord Arbuthnot, Jason Beer KC, HHJ Mark Lucraft KC, Sam Stein KC. The session includes lunch and will conclude with a drinks reception.

Since the Human Rights Act 1998, Article 8 ECHR has become a central organising framework in UK law. It sits at the heart of disputes involving data privacy and mass surveillance, extradition, child protection, immigration, and many other areas, requiring public authorities to justify interferences with private and family life through structured proportionality analysis. Against the backdrop of recurring proposals to repeal the Human Rights Act and replace it with a new domestic rights instrument, this webinar asks: what would life look like without it? Would the common law and Parliament fill the space, or would its absence mark a decisive shift in the balance between individual rights and executive power? Speakers include Sonalia Naik KC (Garden Court Chambers) and Prof Ian Walden (Queen Mary, University of London). Chaired by Micheál Ó Floinn (University of Glasgow)
